Inspection and ply testing a redundant ply bellows requires proper analysis, equipment, procedure and experience. The attached picture shows a failed bellows removed after over pressurization between the bellows plies. Note the imploded inner ply area. After such an event, where the bellows may appear unaffected on the exterior surface, the bellows is incapable of absorbing the movements required. Loss of pressure boundary could occur in this bellows much sooner and without warning.
Proper bellows design is not always as simple as following code rules and equations. The pressure required to cause collapse of an inner ply is not always accurately predicted by standard external pressure equations. The animation shows how the inner ply (only inner ply is shown in the animation) collapse can occur under constant pressure.

Call Pathway for Emergency Response.
It’s approximately 4:30 AM on a Saturday morning, and a plant is unable to restart due to an event that resulted in leaks from (6) different steam supply expansion joints. After a call to Pathway, the plant begins removing the Single and Universal EJs for shipment to one of our plants for refurbishment. With two shifts of Pathway employees responding, all (6) units are returned complete with 1,114# of new alloy 625 bellows with LP NDE and pressure testing, in less than 24 hours after receipt of the units. #SFPathway #PathwayServices #ManufacturingExcellence
